The Letter will explain whether your request was accepted or denied. It will also explain why it was denied. Read more about reasons for abating penalties. You may be able to appeal this decision. The letter should explain the timeframe you have to file an appeal.

      What can you expect next?

If your request was accepted, you will receive a notice showing the changes to account for this tax period.

If your request was denied, the IRS will continue collection activity on that period. If an appeal is filed, the IRS will take 90 to 120 days to review your appeal.
